Velocity Chart: Yu Darvish, May 8th

» 12 May 2009 » In npb »

Here’s what the Yankees saw when they watched Yu Darvish last week.

Note that this velocity chart is in a groovy new javascript format. I’m hoping to add some interactivity to it over the next couple of weeks. This one is kind of the proof of concept, once I see that things are working I’ll jump back on to my schedule. I’ve looked at this chart in Firefox and Chrome, but not much in IE, so if anyone sees any issues please let me know.

Update: hover over each object on the chart and enjoy the effects.

Where do you find all these stats?

I’m looking for the number of at-bats since Kanemoto last took a swing at the first pitch, how many free strikes he’s been giving this way and what’s the record if he surprisingly didn’t beat it yet

I wrote a program to collect the data. It actually should be possible to get the data on Kanemoto that you’re looking for at some point.

Here’s the breakdown of Kanemoto’s last 102 at-bats (I only have data since April 15).

    ‘ball’, 51
    ‘flyout’, 3
    ‘foul’, 3
    ‘groundout’, 1
    ‘strike looking’, 41
    ‘strike swinging’, 3

As you can see, this approach pays off about half the time.
